Fighting for City Water Rights – A Look at a Subdivision in Broussard, LA
Over the years, Louisiana surely has gotten its fair share of news coverage thanks to Hurricane Katrina and the Mississippi flooding. Most people can’t truly understand what it’s like living in some of these areas. Another type of water crisis is occurring within one subdivision in Broussard, LA, which you’ve probably never even heard about, though. In this unannexed community water problems have become so dire that people can no longer continue to live the way they have been. It is vital that something be done about the situation quickly.

Although this subdivision is completely surrounded by Broussard, it has not been annexed to the city. Thanks to the fact that commercial areas bring in more revenue, the city has concentrated most of its efforts on annexing them. The rest of the city has access to clean water unlike the people living in this subdivision. The residents of this subdivision can’t even cook or bathe with the water that they have access to. This dirty water causes blisters and sores on the body when used for bathing.

Residents have tried to find ways to live with the water problems. They have installed private water filtration systems, but the filters turn brown very quickly which means the price of operation is prohibitive. They have turned to drinking bottled water which means still another added expense. They say that they aren’t even able to launder their own clothing using the water, because the clothes come out of the washer dirtier than when they were put in. In vain they have appealed to the city of Broussard to annex them so that they can hook up to the city water, but the city is not quick to go along with this idea.

The hang up, as with most things these days, is money. Although the subdivision could be setup to use the Broussard water system, it would cost a lot of money to expand the system. There isn’t enough money to fix the problem thanks to the fact that Louisana doesn’t have any property taxes. You’re probably wondering what the homeowners in this subdivision are supposed to do about the problem. In the meantime, they are without usable water. They’re also unable to sell their homes since no one wants to live there and there is no value in them.
